A pet parrot has been reunited with his owners after flying off and going on a mini break…to the Isle of Wight.

The wanderlusting bird – named Miguel – vanished leaving Nicky Pointer and Matt Thomas heartbroken.

The pair put out an appeal to find the green Alexandrine Parakeet.

They adopted him after he was found at their workplace in Beaulieu, Hampshire last summer.

But he was discovered the next day in Sandown of the Isle of Wight – 15 miles away.

Naughty Miguel had flown over the sea and the entire island of the south coast before being found in a car park.

The Wildheart Trust took him in before putting out an appeal to trace his owners.

He was then returned to Nicky and Matt two days later on Monday (26 Jun) at their work Beaulieu River harbour.

A Beaulieu River spokesperson said: “Guess who’s back home.

“Miguel, a favourite amongst our visitors and staff went missing from the marina.

“Following an impromptu holiday to the Isle of Wight, we are delighted to announce that he is back home, safe and sound.

“Thanks to all those who spotted him at Yaverland car park in Sandown and reported his whereabouts.

“A special thank you also goes to the incredible team at the The Wildheart Trust for providing a safe haven for Miguel during his island escapade.”

They first took the parrot in after some canoeists found him near their marina.

He got his name because they transported him to them in a San Miguel beer box.

A spokesperson for animal charity The Wildheart Trust said: “A happy ending to the travel escapades of escaped parrot Miguel.

“On Saturday the animal care team were called to assist with the rescue a very friendly parrot spotted in the Yaverland car park.

“He was taken to the sanctuary and looked after by our team as we tried to locate his owners.

“With the help of local residents and some internet searching we were directed to Beaulieu River who had recently lost an Alexandrine Parakeet called Miguel.

“It was quite a journey for Miguel from Beaulieu, near Brockenhurst, on the mainland all the way across the Solent to Sandown.

“We are pleased to report that Miguel has been safely reunited with his owners.

“He obviously decided he needed a holiday from his busy job with the team at Beaulieu River.

“And what better place to go than the sandy shores of Sandown Bay.”

Local Rhian Lewis said: “So happy he has been reunited after his holiday to the island.”

Beverly Larmer added: “Well done and so glad he is home.”

Alana Deadman said: “I can hear a story book about this travelling parrot.

“What a lovely ending.”
