A mysterious message in a bottle has revealed a hidden love story after travelling more than 300,000km over 13 years.

The handwritten note was found by volunteers, Kate and John Gay, during a beach clean-up at Scraggane Bay, a small fishing port on the Maharees peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland, on Monday (7 July).

It had been stuffed into an empty wine bottle and dated “2012”.

And to the shock of Kate and John, it had travelled all the way from Canada.

The letter read: “Anita and Brad’s day trip to Bell Island.

“Today, we enjoyed dinner, this bottle of wine and each other, at the edge of the island.

“If found, please call us on…”

Bell Island is in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada’s easternmost province.

Kate and John Gay, a Co Kerry couple, opened the letter, which was sent 4,680 days ago, at a meeting alongside members of the Creative Ireland Project Maharees Heritage and Conservation.

The group followed the instructions on the letter and rang the number provided – but there was no answer.

The group eventually posted on Facebook, urging anyone who knew Brad or Anita to get in touch.

And Anita eventually made contact.

She joyfully confirmed that she and Brad tied the knot in 2016 and remain happily together.

The couple are now settled in Newfoundland.

The glass bottle had been travelling the Atlantic Ocean for 13 years before it was found, as reported by What’s The Jam.

At the time, the iPhone 4s and Samsung Galaxy S3 had just been released.

Social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, were rapidly gaining ground.

Musicians like Drake, Justin Bieber, and Carly Rae Jepsen were global stars.
