A monster fish has been spotted lurking just beneath the surface of a canal.

It’s so huge that locals initially thought it was a floating log.

The enormous carp is estimated to be over two feet long and weighing more than 30lb.

Dubbed a “unit”, it was seen gliding between moored boats.

The beast dwarfs your average carp, which usually weigh between 10 and 20lb.

It was spotted by Sarah Mather, who couldn’t believe her eyes when the colossal creature drifted past on the Bridgewater Canal near Stretford, Greater Manchester.

“You’re not ready for what’s swimming around the boats on the Bridgewater Canal,” she told What’s The Jam.

“I thought it was a log at first – nope.

“It’s an actual underwater unit.

“A carp that size is very uncommon.

“We were really shocked to see it.”

The Bridgewater Canal – which links Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh – is steeped in history.

Commissioned by Francis Egerton, the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, it was originally built to shuttle coal from his Worsley mines to Manchester.

Opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, it was later extended to Runcorn and Leigh.

And it’s not the first time the canal has produced a whopper.

Back in June, an angler hauled in a 25lb carp.

But this newly spotted leviathan looks set to smash that record.
