A historic milkfloat from period TV show Heartbeat is going under the hammer.

The distinctive vehicle is nearly 70-years-old.

The 1956, petrol-engine Austin-Morris J Type still features its dairy’s distinctive light blue and chocolate brown livery.

It made guest appearances in the ITV police procedural series set in the 1960s.

But it’s day job was serving the Coward Brothers Dairy in Shaftesbury, Dorset for many years and , as reported by Whats The Jam.

Auctioneer Richard Bromell said: “I’ve been involved in auctioning now for 40 years and this is going to be up there as being a top 10 completely bonkers thing.

“It is a really rare opportunity.

“I am pleased to say we still have milk delivered to our home three times a week, although it is in a much more modern milk float.”

Its listing says: “First sent from MC to Goddards in Salisbury, Wilts with the chassis cab on and then sent to Poole to have the milk float body fitted.

“During its lifetime, it was used by the dairy company Coward Brothers in Shaftesbury.

“Whilst owned by Coward Brothers this was the milk float used in the popular programme Heartbeat.

“A rare light commercial vehicle full of charm and patina.”

It will be auctioned by Charterhouse Auctioneers on 23 October at The Haynes Motor Museum, Sparkford, Somerset.

It has an estimate of £12,000 to £14,000.
