IKEA is preparing to launch a second-hand marketplace in the UK where shoppers can buy cheaper furniture and sell unwanted items.

The online platform will allow IKEA Family members to trade pre-owned products directly with other customers in their local area.

Only IKEA furniture and homeware will be accepted, meaning shoppers will not be able to list products made by other brands, as reported by What’s The Jam.

An IKEA spokesperson said: “At IKEA, we are always looking for new ways to make life at home even better and help our customers discover products they love.

“With the launch of IKEA second-hand marketplace in the UK, we’re taking a meaningful step toward creating a destination that simplifies access to pre-owned IKEA furniture.

“Our goal is to make passing on beloved IKEA pieces as seamless as possible.

“We’re creating a trusted and vibrant space to make it quick and easy for our IKEA Family members to trade directly with one another.

“We want the process for buying and selling pre-owned IKEA products to be simple, accessible and rewarding.”

The UK launch follows trials in Madrid and Oslo which began in August 2024.

During the trial, sellers could upload photographs of their furniture before IKEA’s system supplied existing product images, dimensions, assembly instructions and a suggested price.

Buyers and sellers would then arrange how and where the furniture would be handed over locally.

Sellers in participating countries have also been offered the choice of receiving cash or an IKEA gift card worth 15 percent more than the agreed selling price.

IKEA has not yet confirmed whether all these features will be available to UK customers.

The positive response prompted IKEA to expand the service across the whole of Spain and Norway.

It subsequently launched in Portugal and Poland during 2025 before arriving in Sweden, the home of IKEA, in January 2026.

Belgium became the sixth European country to receive the marketplace in April.

IKEA said customers in countries where it was already operating had shown particular interest in second-hand bedroom furniture, storage products and seating.

The marketplace is separate from IKEA’s existing Buyback service, which allows customers to sell eligible furniture directly to the company in exchange for store credit.

The returned furniture can then be resold through the retailer’s second-hand areas.

Almost 686,500 used products were collected through Buyback during IKEA’s 2025 financial year, representing a 39 percent increase on the previous year.

IKEA said more information about the UK marketplace, including its official launch and how customers can participate, would be announced in the coming months.
