A huge collection of tiny Dinky vehicles including a classic Weetabix van has sold for a staggering £87,520.

Over 600 famous toys were auctioned, with some fetching world record prices.

Dinky Toys was the brand name for a range of die-cast zamak zinc alloy scale model vehicles, traffic lights, and road signs produced by British toy company Meccano Ltd.

They were made in England from 1934 to 1979, at a factory in Binns Road, Liverpool.

The auction attracted worldwide interest, featuring a selection of pre- and post-war models, including French Dinky and Type 1 and Type 2 vans and trucks.

A highlight of the auction was a Dinky Toys 101 Thunderbird 2 model based on the 1960s TV series, as reported by What’s The Jam.

The iconic green model sold for £2,570 – thought to be a world record for its type.

A yellow Type 1 Weetabix van also exceeded expectations, selling for £3,300.

And a green 505 Foden flat truck made £3,185.

Another notable item was a French Dinky pre-war 21 train set with box.

While this rare set is listed in reference material, it is rarely seen or pictured.

It was bought for £3,185.

A standard rear-loading Dinky Toys glass cabinet also fetched £1,041.

A Dinky Toys Fun Ahoy set made £710, and a Space 1999 Eagle freighter reached £490.

The models were sold by Vectis Auctions in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham.

A spokesperson said: “Pre-war buses and coaches also commanded consistently high prices.

Demand for the lots far exceeded expectations, thanks to the outstanding quality of the items on offer.

“This Simply Dinky Auction once again proved that quality, rarity, and condition continue to drive exceptional results in the collector’s market.”
