A holy grail piece of Lego which fell into the sea decades ago has been found by a stunned beachcomber.

The black octopus was one of millions of items lost on the Tokio (corr) Express cargo ship off Land’s End, Cornwall in 1997.

A freak wave knocked 62 containers into the sea.

About 4,200 Lego octopuses were onboard the ship and only a handful have been found since.

Jenny Smith, 43, came across the latest one while out on the beach with her family.

The hospital worker and mum-of-two was at Ginst Point, Laugharne, South Wales on Sunday (15 June).

“We’d gone to our usual spot for a Father’s Day beachcomb,” she told, What’s The Jam.

“We’d picked up the usual array of rubbish as we went around.

“We had found a few goodies and decided to head back to the car.

“After heading back I stopped to get sand out of my eyes.

“I looked down and saw a spiral looking shape sticking out of the sand.

“I got out my rake to start digging.

“Then my eyes locked on it and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

“I thought it was the sand in my eyes.

“I squealed with excitement, shouted at my husband and the kids and sat there in complete shock.

“After 12 months of searching we’d only gone and found the holy grail.

“I was beyond chuffed.

“Only 4200 Lego octopus fell into the sea following the cargo spill in 1997 and now one proudly sits on display at home with us.

“It turned out that ours was the first one to be reported as in Wales too.

“We’ve only been Lego hunting for just over 12 months so we are incredibly lucky to have found one.

“And so far away from the original cargo spill.”

A spokesperson for the Lego Lost at Sea group, which records the finds, said: “It’s the first report we’ve had of a Lego octopus being found on a beach in Wales.

“Thanks so much Jenny for sharing with us.

“What a find.”

Among the other lost Lego pieces from the ship were 352,000 pairs of flippers, 97,500 scuba tanks and 92,400 swords.
