Endangered red panda gives birth to adorable cub at British zoo

An endangered red panda has given birth to an adorable cub at a British zoo.

The cub was born to first-time parents, Neora and Laya, at Bristol Zoo Project and is said to be looking strong and healthy.

There are thought to be fewer than 3,000 of the species left in the wild.

They are native to China and the Himalayas, as reported by What’s The Jam.

A spokesperson for Bristol Zoo Project said: “The kit is very, very cute.

“The birth represents a huge win for this endangered species, of which there are thought to be as few as 2,500 individuals in the wild.

“The new kit will mostly be kept safe in the nest boxes by its mum until it’s a bit older.

“But some lucky visitors have already spotted it being carried around by Laya.

“Laya and dad, Neora, arrived at Bristol Zoo Project as part of our critical breeding programme to help protect this Endangered species.

“Red pandas are classified as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

“They are threatened by habitat loss and poaching.”

Red pandas spend most of the day resting in trees, conserving their energy.

They are usually solitary creatures but come together in pairs during the breeding season.
