Drivers singing Band Aid’s hit just like Smithy in the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special are facing a whopping £5,000 fine.

James Cordon’s iconic character in the sitcom belted out Do They Know It’s Christmas in the 2008 episode.

Smithy can be seen driving his motor whilst singing the 1984 track to Matthew Horne’s character Gavin over the phone.

But motorists copying his antics from the BBC sitcom – returning to screens for a one-off this yuletide – could face tough punishment.

Listening to festive songs too loud could fall under driving without due care or attention.

According to online used car retailer Cinch, drivers could be charged up to £5,000.

Drivers are expected to take around 16.1 million trips by car between the 19 December to Christmas Eve this year, say the AA.

With it being one of the busiest times of the year drivers will need to take extra care on the roads.

A fixed penalty of £100 and three points on your driving license is put in place, as reported by What’s The Jam.

This can rise to a staggering £5,000 fine and prosecution if the driver causes an accident that results in injury or fatality.

Sam Sheehan, motoring editor for Cinch, stated: “There’s nothing wrong with driving to music as long as you can still hear hazards like horns and sirens if you need to.”

Rule 148 of The Highway Code states: “Safe driving and riding needs concentration.

“Avoid distractions when driving or riding, such as loud music, this may mask other sounds.”
