A desperate mum who feared she’d lost her wedding and engagement rings forever was left stunned when they were miraculously found at a rubbish tip.

Katie Thomas accidentally threw the precious jewellery away in a bin bag after clearing out some drawers at home.

Two days later, the 34-year-old realised the rings may have been binned by her cheeky three-year-old daughter Phoebe – and could already be buried at the local tip.

But when she called the recycling centre, horrified Katie was told the bag had already gone through the site’s processor.

Undeterred, kind-hearted staff reviewed CCTV footage of her visit and began the painstaking task of searching through piles of rubbish at the Longue Hougue site, north east of St Peter’s Port, Guernsey.

They traced exactly where she’d dropped the bag and even emptied an entire container to look for it.

Incredibly, workers managed to spot her black bag among the mountain of waste – recognising it because Katie had placed two smaller white bags inside.

When she got it home and opened it up, she was overjoyed to see her beloved rings sparkling back at her.

“I can’t express enough gratitude to everyone who went above and beyond to help me find my engagement ring and wedding ring,” Katie, who lives nearby on Guernsey, told What’s The Jam.

“Which had somehow ended up in a black waste bag courtesy of my three-year-old daughter.

“The amazing staff at Guernsey Waste worked tirelessly and quite literally dug through mountains of rubbish to reunite me with my rings.

“It truly was like finding a needle in a haystack.

“I thought the chance of finding them was very, very slim.

“Most people said it was highly unlikely

“But they did it, and I’m beyond grateful.

“Their kindness, determination and good humour turned what could’ve been a heartbreaking loss into an unbelievable happy ending.

“The staff at Guernsey Waste are absolute heroes.”

Katie’s wedding ring was designed by her husband, Dan.

And to say thank you, their pair delivered a box of doughnuts to the heroic crew.

Katie added: “When I realised that the rings were lost, I felt sick because of the sentimental value of the rings.

“When we found them, it was almost like the biggest release.

“I didn’t know whether to cry or not cry happy tears.

“We were so relieved.”

Now she’s vowed to be extra careful with her jewellery in future.

She added: “If my rings come off, they will go in a little locked box.

“It will be a story to tell my daughter when she gets older.”
