A children’s book checked out in 1979 has finally been returned to Camden Public Library after 46 years - the borrower found it while moving house and donated to the library.

A children’s book has been returned to a library 46 years late.

A former resident came across the illustrated novel while packing boxes for a home move.

Diana Edwards used to live in Camden, Maine, US, in the late 1970s to early 1980s.

She then moved to Vermont in 1984 and is currently preparing for another move from Massachusetts to New Hampshire.

The copy of ‘Bunches and Bunches of Bunnies’, written by Louise Mathews and illustrated by Jeni Bassett, has been following her on every move.

The children’s book was checked out from the Camden Public Library in August 1979, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Diana said: “My children and I lived on Pearl Street from the mid-1970s to around 1984, when we moved to Vermont.

“Those bunnies have been travelling with me since then.”

She returned to her old hometown and returned the book to the Camden Public Library.

Amy Hand, the library’s director of youth services, said: “I returned to the library after having the weekend off to find this book.

“This was published in 1978 and was taken out of the library in August 1979.

“It was returned because someone found it this weekend.

“You never know when a lost book might come back.”

Amy described the book as a “counting story” and said she plans to “read it with my story-time kids”.

Library officials explained that they no longer enforce late fees, but even under the old structure, all fines were capped at .

Diana decided to donate an undisclosed sum to the library in gratitude for their understanding.
