A family-of-four who all work the same job place bets on who will mention work at dinner first.

Chris Edwards was the first to land an engineering role at Amazon, leaving behind his job as a sparky and contractor.

The 42-year-old dad was soon followed by his wife, Sam, 43, and their children, James, 22, and Georgie, 20.

They work at fulfilment centres across the UK – including Doncaster, Leeds and Wakefield.

While they love sharing the career, they say being in different locations – and working different shift patterns – is “probably for the best”.

“We try to avoid talking about our jobs at the dinner table,” Georgie, who lives in Doncaster, told What’s The Jam.

“We even have a little bet at family meals to see who will mention Amazon first – it’s usually James or Dad.

“Sometimes we do have to remind ourselves to talk about something else but it’s tricky when you ask someone how their day went and they work exactly where you do.

“That said, it’s really useful to have family members who understand the work and can offer advice.

“We’re spread across different fulfilment centres, which is probably for the best.

“It’s a pretty unique set-up but we’re making the most of it and really enjoying the experience.”

Georgie moved out of the family home to live with her partner but still makes the effort to have dinner with her family when she can.

Chris was the one who first sparked an interest in working at Amazon.

He said: “I was working as an electrician and a contractor, but it just wasn’t giving me the fulfilment I was looking for.

“I wanted a job where I could keep learning and developing my skills.

“I completed an engineering apprenticeship with another company before joining Amazon in a maintenance engineering role and I haven’t looked back since.”

James, who used to work in construction management, applied for an apprenticeship after seeing how much his dad enjoyed the job.

He said: “Seeing how much my dad enjoyed his apprenticeship and the opportunities it was giving him made me think, ‘Why not try something similar’.

“I wanted a career where I could keep learning and have more options for the future.

“I’ve never been someone who learns best by sitting in a classroom all day, so an apprenticeship has been the perfect alternative to university for me.”

Meanwhile Sam, who had been a stay-at-home mum for years prior joined.

She said: ““I was a stay-at-home mum for years, and I knew it was time to do something for myself.

“I didn’t let my age or experience hold me back, and I’m so glad I went for it.

“It’s never too late to learn something new.”

Georgie was the last to join her Amazon family.

She said: “Before my apprenticeship, I was stuck in jobs that went nowhere..

“Every day felt the same and there was no real future in it.

“Watching my family build established careers with real opportunities for growth made me realise that I wanted that too – so I went for it.”

Sam and Georgie, who are both still finishing their apprenticeships, hope to step into full-time roles at Amazon very soon.
