Brit expats have been left fuming after being charged nearly £6 to use cash points in Benidorm.

One reacted with shock at the fee to use the ATM at a Santander bank.

The cheap and cheerful Spanish resort is home to over 3,300 Brits who live there permanently.

Last year, an estimated 832,000 holidaymakers from the UK descended on the Costa Blanca hotspot.

British expats in Benidorm are furious over €7 (£5.84) ATM withdrawal fees at Santander, calling it "daylight robbery" as cash access costs soar in the popular resort.

The angry Brit went to withdraw the lowest amount €50 – or £41.75 – in cash.

But, it came up on the screen he would have to fork out €7 – which works out at £5.84 – for the privilege.

And they could even get an extra hidden fee on top of that.

A message on the screen said: “The bank owner of this ATM will charge you a commission of €7.

Your issuing entity may charge you for this transaction, too.

Would you like to continue?”

The man told What’s The Jam: “British expats and tourists in Benidorm are now being charged 7 euros to take their own cash out at Santander cash points in the centre.

“It is outrageous.

“Most ATMs are free to use, and those that do charge only used to cost an extra quid or so.

“But this is daylight robbery.”

The resort has been made popular by the ITV sitcom – called Benidorm – which ran from 2007 to 2018.

Santander has been approached for comment.
