A baffled Brit abroad was blown away after a driverless taxi came to pick him up.

Luke Penlington could not believe his eyes when he entered an unmanned motor.

The 28-year-old moved to Wuhan, China two years ago.

Since leaving the UK, Luke has been taken aback by how technologically advanced the country is compared to his home nation.

Driverless taxis are extremely common over there, being a normal part of everyday life.

Luke was just making a 10 minute trip to a local coffee shop when he and his friends booked the taxi.

In the motor the driver seat is empty with a plastic console covering the steering wheel with the car operating itself.

The journey only cost him the equivalent of 60p with no fares needed to be paid to the driver.

Luke filmed himself in the cab and had a jokey conversation with the driver.

It mimicked the stereotypical, polite conversation passengers have with taxi drivers.

He said: “Been busy mate tonight?

“What time are you on until?”

He added: “Bit rude, didn’t answer me.”

Luke, originally of Redditch, Worcestershire, told What’s The Jam: “Before moving I’d never seen anything like that, only ever in films.

“My initial thoughts were that the car would be really slow and hesitant but they’re very smooth and have a natural feeling.

“Our car even beeped its horn when another driver cut it up.

“The journey itself feels really safe, electric cars are always much smoother rides.

“I’ve heard that they’re around nowadays in England but I’d never seen anything like that before I moved.

“I do feel China is quite far ahead in technology, especially available transport.

“There are so many ways to avoid driving here.

“It was a taxi fare and amazingly for us to take a short 10-minute journey it was only 60 pence.

“The fact there’s no rate for the driver means they can be cheap.

“I’d tried living in various places in the UK and nothing was really satisfying me and I felt my routine that I was in I just couldn’t do forever.

“Thought I’d give it a go, best decision I ever made.”
