The Great British Bake Off is returning to our screens tonight (24 September) but one avid baker has shown how bizarre the craft can get – with her “alive” sourdough starter.
Mary Reynolds, 34, is constantly cooking and whipping up treats such as soft pretzels, scones and cookies for her husband and six children.
The photographer loves experimenting with food, but recently, one of her creations has come to life.

And it’s left viewers totally freaked out – with the bizarre clip racking up 8.5m views and over 452,000 likes.
“I began my sourdough journey earlier this year and it wasn’t until this summer that I discovered what a strong and lively starter I had,” the mum, who also runs a micro-bakery, told What’s The Jam.
“EisenSour is a happy natural wild yeast culture and he has since yielded countless sourdough loaves.
“I’ve gotten all types of reactions both in person and online from the sight of my overactive starter.
“Whether the reactions are positive or negative, I hope it brings attention to the ancient art of sourdough baking.”
In the clip, Mary uses a ladle to sift through the starter, which appears to be bubbling and moving all on its own.
Users have flocked to the comments to share their reactions, with many people left in shock.
“This starter is more alive than I am,” Karen said.
Emily added: “My trypophobia would never let me bake sourdough.”
“Omg this is the first sourdough starter video that has shocked me,” Natalia commented.
Another user added “Tell it to stop that.”
“This video alone just ensured that I will never attempt sourdough bread bc I hated every second of this,” Emily said.
Someone else commented: “This just deterred me away from wanting to start making my own sourdough. That makes me feel uncomfy.”
Mary, from Texas, US, added: “Keeping this alive and well in the community with all its health benefits is important to me.
“Being a diabetic myself, I can attest to these gut health benefits – and not only is it good for us, but it tastes delicious.
“It fuels my inner artist and food loving soul.
“It’s truly a passion.”
