A woman has sparked conversation online after explaining the “girl math” trend to her fiancé.
Shilee Hesman, 22, had never thought about the way she handled her time and money before, until coming across a TikTok video about the topic.
The trend, known as girl math, describes the thought process behind the way some women think about their finances, such as a refund being classed as “free money”.
In a clip posted on TikTok, which has racked up 21.5 million views and 2.7 million likes, the content creator explains the idea to her fiancé, Antonio, 23.

“I think us girls are constantly overthinking and worrying and this is our way of feeling rewarded or accomplished,” Shilee, from St. Louis, US told What’s The Jam.
“I saw other videos of girls talking about math that makes sense in their heads and I was like: ‘I do this.’
“Girl math does make sense – or at least it makes me feel better about purchases and money.”
Shilee explains a few examples, including buying something with cash means it’s free.
She says: “Because the money was never in my bank account, so I never got to see that money […] go down, so it’s basically just free.”

Other examples include “making” money from returning an item, rounding down the price of goods to make them seem cheaper and thinking holidays are “free” if they were paid for months before going.
And it’s not only money where girl math is involved.
Shilee explains the difference when determining if a sports bra and a regular bra is dirty, saying that regular ones are still “clean” after two months, rather than needing to be washed after each use.

Despite her efforts to teach her fiancé, he is still left confused by the logic.
Users have flocked to the comments to share their reactions, with many people leaving their own thought processes.
“Girl math…if I have a doctors appointment at 1 pm on Monday my whole day is booked and busy,” Lyana said.
Another user added: “Girl math: spending another $30 in order to get free shipping otherwise it’s like I’m losing money if I don’t.”
Khanyi said: “Girl Math = if I have 289 in my bank account I actually only have 200 the 89 is free money.”
“The bra math why is that sooo accurate!!! Lmaoo,” Emely added.
Megan commented: “When I’m shopping I’ll round everything I put in my cart up so when I check out and the total is lower than what I expected, I saved money.”
“Him being so confused but all women nodding because this IS infact *Girl Math*,” someone else said.
Shilee, from Missouri, US, added: “I knew this was something [we] had not talked about before, which is crazy because we know just about everything about each other,
“I decided to share and see his reaction to how us girls work.
“[His reaction is] understandable, but also how is he not getting this?”
