A video has been shared online of the terrifying moment a man was swallowed up by the ground while out in the sunshine.

Colton Macaulay was out exploring with a friend when they came across a huge bog, which is an area of wetland that accumulates dead plants and peat moss.

These are usually found by freshwater and the ground can have a spongey, elastic consistency.

Excited, the 26-year-old began jumping around the bog but had no idea of the horrors that would follow.

In a video later shared to Instagram, Colton reveals how he nearly drowned after disappearing into the swamp.

The clip has over 6.6 million views.

“Being fully submerged was honestly pretty terrifying,” Colton, a content creator from Nova Scotia, Canada, told What’s The Jam.

“The scariest part being down there is not knowing what else is down there touching you.

“And if you go to deep in one of the holes, there’s always a chance you might lose that hole and not be able find your way out.”

The incident took place on 14 July with the video racking up the likes online in the weeks following.

In the clip, Colton can be seen hopping from different sides of the bog, and jumping up and down on some areas.

But as he lands onto a spot, he suddenly falls into the wetland.

His body is fully submerged and his hands can be seen sinking above his head.

His friend then stops filming to help Colton get out.

The wetland they had visited was close to home, just outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The influencer likes “pushing the limits” with his content but admits it is “not safe” to behave this way in bogs.

He said: “I’m always pushing the limits with content.

“Whether it’s getting stuck in quicksand, catching venomous snakes, flipping off cliffs.

“I did it for my content, which usually has a fear factor, and bogs definitely bring that to the table.

“It is not safe.

“If you fall through a bog you never know how deep you’re gonna go in.

“Some bugs also carry bacteria and may leave you sick.”

The creator captioned the post, which has over 83,000 likes: “It was much deeper than I expected,” where it has gained hundreds of comments.

Mehul said: “There’s something called brain eating amoeba and that’s exactly how you get infected with it.”
