A bin man has revealed exactly how to tell where your wrapping paper should end up after Christmas.

Ashley is a bin man who regularly shares top tips online to his more than 149,000 followers.

In a recent clip, which garnered 140,000 views on TikTok, the self-described ‘bin-fluencer’, 37, offered advice on how to tell which bin to use for your wrapping paper after the chaos of Christmas morning.

“It depends on the wrapping paper,” Ashley, from South East England, told What’s The Jam.

“So if you have actual wrapping paper paper, what you should be able to do with it is screw it into a ball – and if it stays in the ball, it’s just paper and that can go in your paper recycling bin.

“If it’s got lots of Sellotape or labels all over it, then take them off and then just put it in the paper bin.

“Save some room in your general waste.

“But if you screw into a ball and it starts expanding back out again, that’s got mainly plastic in it, and that should not go in your paper bin.

“It’s not paper, it’s mainly plastic and it’s got a film over it – that one would go in your general waste.”

He also claimed that local councils may have differing rules, but as a general rule of thumb he added: “If it expands, its plastic – if it stays as it is, it’s paper.”

Ashley offered some advice on what people should remember during the festive season too.

He said: “Remember your bin day is going to change so set a new reminder for those days.

“Also, if your general waste is full, don’t risk putting the wrong items in the recycling bin.

“Most councils have great websites with an A-to-Z of what goes in each bin.”

Ashley claims there are a number of other things people often get confused about when it comes to putting them into recycling versus general waste bins – including polystyrene.

He said: “I’m yet to find a council that recycles it.

“For some reason loads of people put it in their paper recycling bin or leave it in their cardboard boxes.

“Yes it is plastic, but not recyclable in your household bin so put it in your general waste bin.

“Also takeaway food packaging – if it has leftover food or grease on it, then it can’t be recycled.

“Pizza boxes are the worst, full of grease and sometimes even have pizza left in them.

“It’s not recyclable in your cardboard recycling bin.”

Ashley implored the public to “remember the bin men are still working” over the Christmas period.

He added: “So when you are parking your cars think to yourself ‘can a bin lorry get past?’

“As you don’t want the bin men asking you to move your car first thing in the morning on your day off!”
