A pair of Rio Ferdinand’s old football boots have sold for £23,400 – because they’re diamond-encrusted and coated in gold.

The ex-England and Manchester United centre-back had them specially made for him.

The size 11 Nike boots – which weigh 1kg – have hundreds of white diamonds set all over them.

They are also forming a number 5 – Ferdinand’s shirt number – on the front.

The boots – which the now pundit has signed – also have an 18ct rose gold shield on them.

The laces have also been tipped in gold.

The boots were commissioned by Embee Jewels of London.

Former fashion model and dancer Luisa Di Marco came up with the idea of designing and creating the world’s most expensive boots after speaking to Ferdinand’s management.

Di Marco crafted the boots with fashion designer Scott Henshall and they were customised with spray paint and graffiti-style artwork by film producer Goldie.

They went under the hammer yesterday (19 Aug), as reported on What’s The Jam.

The Ewbank’s auction took place in Woking, Surrey.

A spokesman for the auctioneers said: “Each boot has an applied in 18 carat rose gold shield, with a central No.5 set with white round brilliant cut diamonds, estimated total white diamond weight 0.60 carat and round cut black diamonds set detail.

“Each tongue set with a gold circular black diamond set panel 2.4cm in diameter, and a No. 90 set with white diamonds, estimated total white diamond weight 0.25 carat.

“A large black diamond set Nike Swoosh 12.1 x 4.1cm, to one side and a smaller white diamond set Nike Swoosh 5.3 x 2cm, estimated total white diamond weight 0.82 carat.

“Gold tipped laces, each set with round brilliant cut white diamonds termination, estimated weight at 0.22 carat each.

They were tipped to sell for a minimum of £20,000.

Ferdinand won a host of honours at Old Trafford including six Premier League titles and one Champions League.

The 46-year-old also won 81 England caps.
