One of oldest football grounds in the UK has been left submerged under water due to heavy rain.

Porthmadog FC’s home called Y Traeth – which translates as The Beach – resembles a lake.

It follows a deluge of soggy weather over the last few days.

An official at the 153-year-old club waded through the flood which also hit adjoining land.

Unsurprisingly their fixtures have been postponed this weekend at the north Wales club due to the heavily waterlogged pitch.

A spokesperson for Porthmadog FC told What’s The Jam: “The ground is known as Y Traeth – The Beach.

“After land reclaimed from the sea 200 years ago to form what is now the town of Porthmadog.

“The club has played here since 1872.”

Some locals managed to see the funny side though.

Ifan Hughes said: “I think they need a new groundskeeper… and maybe a boat.”

And John Fenner suggested: “How about playing water polo?”

While Stephen Asbury said: “Drain the pitch and we’ll be there.”

The team plays in the Ardal NW League.

The club was founded in 1872 and plays at Y Traeth, Porthmadog, which accommodates 3,000 spectators with 800 seated.
