A woman has gone viral on TikTok and kickstarted a trend – after sharing her uncanny resemblance to a portrait of her great-great-grandmother.
Ellery Broga, 24, couldn’t believe her eyes when she spotted the picture while visiting her grandmother, immediately clocking how similar she looked to her ancestor.
She shared a video of herself and the portrait of her grandmother’s grandmother, Jessie, on TikTok, where it garnered 8 million views.
The viral clip even prompted its own trend, with others using the same song – ‘O Superman’ by Laurie Anderson, specifically the lyrics “Well you don’t know me, but I know you” – to share their own strange coincidences.

Viewers couldn’t believe Ellery’s resemblance to Jessie, saying it gave them “chills”.
She first spotted the portrait hanging over the guest bed at her grandmother’s home while visiting recently.
“The first night that I was there, I spent a good deal of time staring at the portrait with a lot of curiosity,” Ellery, from Fairfax, Virginia, US, told What’sTheJam.com.
“I think I felt a strong connection to it, but I did not have any idea who she was.

“The following morning, I asked Grannie who the portrait was.
“She was delighted to tell me all about my great-great-grandmother, Jessie.
“That evening after learning her story, I sat down and pondered even more about the portrait.

“I stared at it, and I couldn’t help but think of O Superman by Laurie Anderson – the line she sings ‘You don’t know me, but I know you’.
“I think I just felt bad that I didn’t know her until that day.
“I wanted others to know her as well.
“I made the TikTok as a way to express a connection that transcends time.”
Ellery asked her grandmother about Jessie Challis, and she said she was born in 1887 in Holland, Erie County, New York.
According to Ellery’s grandmother, Jessie married in 1909 and they had three daughters together – including Ellery’s grandmother’s mother.
Jessie died in 1923 in childbirth.
The post racked up more than 850,000 likes and thousands of comments.
