Two hungry hounds started a house fire after turning on a gas hob when trying to reach some cupcakes.

The pesky pooches – both boxers – jumped up to reach the freshly baked goodies while their owners were out.

They accidentally switched on the hob and ignited a tea towel.

The alarm was raised when a neighbour heard the smoke alarm and saw thick smoke coming from the house.

Firefighters in Yeovil, Somerset arrived in five minutes to find a small but progressive fire which was quickly put out.

The dogs were removed safely from the house and given oxygen as reported by What’s The Jam.

The fire crew said the fire left the building with smoke damage, but no one was injured and the dogs were treated with pet oxygen masks.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Yeovil White Watch attended an incident where a couple of doggies who were home alone jumped up in the kitchen to have a sneaky smell of some delicious, freshly baked cupcakes.

“When they inadvertently turned the gas hob on.

“Unbeknown to our canine friends a small but progressive fire was starting to build due to a tea towel on the hob, filling their home with thick smoke.

“Thankfully the owners had working smoke alarms and although only the dogs were in the property the alarms were heard by a vigilant neighbour who confirmed there was a fire and immediately called 999.

“Crews arrived within five minutes, donned breathing apparatus and forced entry into the property, located the dogs using a thermal imaging camera and rescued them to a place of safety.

“Pet oxygen masks provided by the Smokey Paws Charity for the fire service were used to administer oxygen and thankfully these dogs were able to be reunited safely to their worried owner.

“The fire was dealt with and the property ventilated using a Positive Pressure Ventilation fan.

“The owners were out at the time.

“Thankfully we were alerted by a neighbour in time.

“It could have been much worse.”

The service urged people to check fire alarms were working and added: “Our animal friends can be responsible for accidents involving fire.

“Prevent them from getting into areas or close proximity where fire can become a risk to your home.”

The happy ending was well received.

Julie Coombes said: “Well done to everyone involved.
