A crafty orangutan was caught stealing food from its neighbour’s enclosure with an improvised tool.

A camera set up at the zoo snapped the cheeky monkey carrying out the theft.

In a clip, which has racked up over 740,000 views, the animal can be seen using a piece of material to pass through the metal grille.

As they push the tool further through, they strike gold as it reaches the pile of vegetables scattered on the floor.

It swipes the from side-to-side, carefully pushing the grub closer to itself.

Then, the monkey uses its fingers to poke through the fence, before snapping up the goods.

It then went shamelessly for another round as its neighbour simply watched on.

The hilarious footage was shared on Monday (9 Sep) by Tama Zoological Park in Tokyo, Japan.

The zoo wrote: “The whole crime was caught on camera in a room in the orangutan enclosure at Tama Zoo.”

Social media users had fun in the comments.

One person wrote: “This isn’t the first time, is it?”

It’s not the first time orangutans have left people stunned by their human-like behaviour, as reported by What’s The Jam.

One specimen from Indonesia shocked scientists earlier this year when it created a medicinal paste from plants and put it on a cheek wound.

Incredibly, it cured itself within a month.
