Social media users expressed astonishment as a Scottish family recounted the harrowing encounter when a shark aggressively attacked a turtle right before their eyes.
Ruth Gaw, accompanied by her husband Derek and children Arran and Chloe, opted for a day of exploration at Monkey Mia beach on the Western coast of Australia, a choice they made following their recent relocation from Perth, Scotland.
In search of an ideal spot for snorkeling and fishing, the family’s plans took an unexpected turn when they witnessed a tiger shark swiftly pursuing a turtle. Ruth recorded the alarming incident, later sharing the video on Facebook (@ruthyroo), where it amassed over 154,000 views.
Describing the predator, Ruth remarked, “It was around a 2.5m tiger shark,” as reported by What’sTheJam.com.

Witnessing the swift approach of the massive shark near the shore left the family in awe, with Ruth expressing the intensity of the moment, stating, “It was incredible to see such a big shark come in so fast close to shore. We were just left speechless with what we just witnessed. My heart was racing. But luckily, the turtle got away.”
The video clip captures the tiger shark’s casual approach towards the shore before abruptly veering to the right.
Fortunately, the turtle displayed remarkable agility, swimming away swiftly and eluding the jaws of the oncoming shark. In the aftermath, the shark thrashes in the water before eventually giving up and swimming away.
Ruth accompanied the video with the caption “Close encounter,” a post that has garnered over 1.5k shares and numerous comments. Social media users chimed in with reactions ranging from disbelief to amazement.
