A turtle has laid 105 eggs on a beach in an unexpected holiday spot beloved by Brits.

Awestruck sunseekers alerted police after spotting the reptile on the sand on Thursday morning (31 Jul).

Officers quickly arrived and cordoned off the area, awaiting the arrival of wildlife wardens.

The surprising scenes unfolded on Els Griells beach, in L’Estartit, on Spain’s Costa Brava.

Torroella de Montgrí Town Council said: “The turtle was examined (including an ultrasound and veterinary check), microchipped, and fitted with a satellite transmitter to track its movements and interactions with humans.

“The nest was relocated about 50 metres to a safer spot to protect it from strong easterly storms and to ensure successful incubation.

“Some eggs were taken to an incubator to maximise hatching success.”

The turtle has been identified as a loggerhead (Caretta caretta).

While the Mediterranean is part of the species’ natural range, nesting on the Spanish mainland – especially along the Costa Brava – remains a rare sight.

The hatchlings are expected to emerge by mid to late September, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Torroella de Montgrí Town Council added: “This is the fourth nest recorded this summer on the Costa Brava and the tenth in Catalonia overall – matching the 2023 record.

“If you see a sea turtle or a nest, do not approach it. Call 112 or the Local Police immediately.”

Local resident Nuria said: “Exciting. Hopefully in a few years, this won’t be such a rare event.”
