A baked bean fanatic is planning to race to the supermarket to stock up on 500 tins of his favourite snack after the government announced they would be slashing prices of the supermarket staple.
Captain Beany, whose real name was Barry Kirk before he changed it by deed poll in 1991, says he is delighted by the news, believing it could help ease the pressure on bean lovers who have been struggling with rising prices.
He estimates he spends around £50 a month on beans and gets through five tins every week, with his daily diet consumed by the snack.

So it’s no surprise the 72-year-old will be wasting no time preparing to fill his trolley, with plans to stockpile hundreds of tins to ensure he can continue enjoying his beloved beans for the foreseeable future.
“It’s about time the government had some half-baked ideas,” the pensioner, from Port Talbot, Wales, told What’s The Jam.

“I’m one of the nation’s greatest, most passionate baked bean consumers, and when I saw the news, my eyes lit up.
“It’s great for the nation and baked bean consumers.
“I’ll be rushing to the supermarket to fill my trolley up with beans – 500 tins!”

The self-confessed baked bean addict said he had been taken aback by the rising cost of his favourite Heinz beans.

He says that he had been forced to switch to supermarket own-brand alternatives two years ago after noticing prices creeping up.
Captain Beany said: “Heinz are the nation’s staple, but I’m feeling the pinch.

“I’m a pensioner, and every little helps.
“I’m addicted and obsessed with baked beans, so I stock up on packs of four [at a time].

“I hope to continue consuming plenty of baked beans now the government has helped out.”
The bean enthusiast, who once made the Guinness Book of World Records for spending 100 hours in a bath filled with baked beans, has built much of his life around the cupboard staple.
He said: “Breakfast is a ‘beanacolada’, which is a glass of baked beans, and I look forward to it every morning.
“Lunch is beans on toast with Worcestershire sauce, and dinner is a jacket potato, cheese and beans.”

The superfan intends to store his upcoming enormous haul of 500 tins in his bean museum, despite having closed the attraction in 2023 after struggling to sell its collection.
Captain Beany said his passion began decades ago, when Heinz’s famous advertising campaigns helped cement the product’s place in British households.
He said: “Beans are the nation’s staple.
“At school there were always beans with everything at dinnertime.
“In the sixties, Heinz created a jingle, and it was a psychological thing.

“I was brainwashed with baked beans.”
Captain Beany went on to establish the Baked Bean Museum of Excellence in 2009, turning his home into a shrine to all things beans, with more than 450 pieces of memorabilia from around the world.
However, after announcing that the museum would close amid renovations to his council flat, he attempted to sell the collection for £5,000, with half the proceeds intended for charity.
After repeatedly failing to attract a buyer, he confirmed the end of the museum in 2023.

He has since spoken of his hopes of finding love, even joking that he would like to meet a future partner he could call ‘Tina Beans’.
Captain Beany added: “My friends and family think I’m totally obsessed with beans and I always tell them that’s why I’m always full of happiness and beans.”
