A bride has gone viral and left people cracking up after taking her husband’s unusual surname – with some asking if it’s actually real.

Laura Wood tied the knot with her beau last month after 14 years together.

The couple first met at university in Preston and have been inseparable ever since.

But in the lead-up to the wedding, Laura faced a decision that had been the butt of jokes among friends for years – whether or not to take her husband’s, Danny’s, surname and become Mrs Laura Large.

Born Laura Wood, her friends had joked for years about double-barrelled alternatives such as ‘Large-Wood’ or ‘Wood-Large’.

At the time, Laura was working a 9-to-5 graphic design job and worried that signing off emails as “Laura Large” might not be taken seriously.

Now self-employed as a nail technician, the 32-year-old rarely uses her full name.

When the day came to make a decision, she saw no reason not to live it up Large.

“I used to find the idea of taking his name quite funny,” Laura, who lives in Stockport, Greater Manchester, told What’s The Jam.

“It felt surreal because us getting married was a way off, so it just felt like a joke.

“I’m only 4ft 11in, which makes the Large name funnier.

“Friends would say, ‘You’re going to become Laura Large, you know that, don’t you?’

“When we did get married, I wasn’t sure if I was going to change it on social media, but I thought, sod it, I’ll do it for the plot.”

The couple got engaged in 2021 on their 10-year anniversary during a staycation in Bath.

On the big day on 4 July, the pair celebrated their ceremony at Stockport Town Hall before hiring a big red vintage bus to take 70 guests to Manchester city centre.

When Laura later posted a video on TikTok revealing her new surname, the clip went viral – with 34,000 people reacting to it.

Among the 1,400 comments were some people who said it reminded them of The Large Family, a popular children’s book series by Jill Murphy featuring a family of elephants.

In a fitting twist, Laura’s sister gifted her the books on the morning of her wedding.

Others told her the name sounds like a superhero or a fictional character.

Laura, who recently launched the podcast, Nails and Yap, said: “When we were looking at all the options, Danny said he really likes his surname.

“And he’s the only boy in his family, so he wanted to carry the name on.

“I also knew we wanted to have the same name for our kids.

“When I posted the video, people were laughing about it in a nice way.”

Although she admits “Laura Large” still doesn’t feel just right yet, the name is growing on her.

Laura added: “I’m quite headstrong, and if I didn’t want the name, I wouldn’t have taken it.

“I haven’t felt any pressure to do it.

“For us, because we have been together for so long, getting married, nothing has changed, and I knew it would feel like that.

“The only thing that feels different is that my bank account feels lower [from the wedding costs].

“It feels nice having the same name – it’s like having a connection and makes us feel closer.”
