A thrifty mum has shared a clever hack for keeping avocados fresh for up to a month.
Amy Cross has built a following of 127,000 on Instagram, where she shares tips and tricks for avoiding food waste and maximising your groceries.
The 48-year-old shared a clip on Instagram detailing her method for giving the fruit their best chance at longevity – and it’s very simple.

The mum shared two routes to maintaining a fresh avocado.
For the first, she says: “An avocado cut in half with a metal lid [container] will stay fresh for about a week after you cut it.”
But to extend that further, Amy says: “If you store avocados in your fridge drawer with a lemon, they will stay fresh for a month once you first buy them.”
She shared her tips on how best to extend their fridge life.
“Buy Avocados that are ripe – they should have a little give to them,” Amy, from Washington, US, told What’s The Jam.

“Wash in 10 cups of water and a 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar for two minutes to kill off any mould spores, listeria and other harmful pathogens.
“When dry, put them in the crisper drawer with lemons and other citrus and they will stay fresh for a month.
“If you do get hard avocados put them near a banana or apple to help speed up the ripening process.

“When only using half an avocado store it in a glass jar with a metal lid and it will stay fresh for a week with no browning.
“If you happen to save the side with the pit it will last even longer.”
Amy shares her simple tips with her 120,000 followers on Instagram (@thecrosslegacy ) and on her YouTube channel.
Her recent avocado-themed post garnered 12,000 likes.
