Are you a parent in dire need of some alone time?

This mum has a great solution.

Wendy Gilmour from Glasgow has revealed how she used plain IKEA bunk beds to create a “bunk room” for her kids – and it’s so good, they stayed in there for hours.

And she saved herself over £1,000 on the impressive glow-up.

The content creator decided to try her dab hand at DIY after spotting the beds on Facebook Marketplace.

Grabbing some building materials from a local store, she set to work sprucing up the plain frame.

Posting the transformation on Instagram (@thankfifi ), her passion project has since gone viral, receiving over 2m views and 84,000 likes.

“We worked on the project, mostly in the evenings when the kids were sleeping at my mum’s,” the 41-year-old told What’sTheJam.com.

“It was a labour of love but it makes me smile every time I walk past their room and hear them chattering away from one bunk to another.

“It fits the period of our home and I really love the design and colour we went with.”

Seeking inspiration from Pinterest boards and interior designers, the mum-of-two decided to go all out and create a project that her children would love.

Spending £30 on the preloved bed, she used pine lengths, cladding, and six months of her time on the renovation.

She said: “The total project came in at under £350.

“I would guess something like this might have come in at approximately £1500-£2000 for a complete job.”

She even got her kids, Hunter, six, and Summer, four, involved with them choosing the paint, whilst Wendy was left to cover the handy work.

She said: “They love it – from the novelty of bunk beds to being involved in the colour choice.

“To storing all their books and treasures on their shelves and their own little reading lights too.”

Taking to the DIY project, she decided to add her own touch to other ventures around the house, transforming the treehouse and sun patio.

But the best part for the mum though was seeing her children’s reactions.

She added: “Finally, seeing their faces when the room was complete and we moved back home following our renovation at Christmas time, they went straight to the bunkroom and didn’t emerge for two hours.

“They loved it so much they didn’t want to see the rest of the house.”
