A motoring enthusiast has shared what she claims are simple and affordable tricks to keep your car in great shape, using everyday household items.
Known online as ‘Driver Ms May,’ this car lover demonstrates creative ways to fix common car problems without spending much money.
In one of her viral videos, which has garnered over 1.6 million views, she uses toothpaste as an unexpected solution for removing scratches from a vehicle.

The video shows her applying a dab of toothpaste to the car’s surface and then rubbing it with a towel, wiping in a back-and-forth motion.
To the amazement of viewers, the scratch seems to vanish, and the car’s paintwork looks as good as new.
But toothpaste isn’t just for scratches, according to May. In the clip, she explains that the product serves three different purposes when it comes to car care.
She can be heard asking: “Why do a billion experienced drivers keep toothpaste in their cars? It’s because toothpaste has three functions. It’s very practical.”
She then demonstrates that toothpaste can also be useful in rainy weather. By spreading it on wing mirrors, she claims it can stop water droplets from forming.
Her third hack involves applying toothpaste to wiper blades, which, she says, can rejuvenate old blades, helping them clean the windshield more effectively.
In another video, viewed over 760,000 times, May, who hails from China, introduces additional household items that could be handy in caring for your car.
One surprising tip involves using a halved potato to combat water droplets on mirrors during wet weather. She explains: “When driving in the rain, it’s easy for water to collect on the rearview mirrors.
But the car really ‘fears’ potatoes. Simply wipe the mirror with a cut potato, and no more water droplets will appear.”
May also addresses the issue of car headlights turning dull and discolored over time. Her solution? Pour cola over the headlights, then follow up with beer, and wipe it all down with a towel. According to her, this process will restore the headlights’ brightness.
For her final tip, May suggests using soap to silence squeaky car doors. She advises applying the soap to the door’s limiter and rubbing it a few times to eliminate the noise. “The annoying sound will disappear,” she says.
While many viewers were intrigued by her tips, not everyone was convinced. Some expressed doubts, as noted by Luxury Auto News.
One commenter mentioned feeling uneasy about her final hack, saying: “The last one makes me uncomfortable for no reason.”
Another joked about her headlight fix, writing: “I’m not wasting beer on headlights.”
A third viewer questioned the practicality of using food products, saying: “We’re just wasting food and products.”
Still, May received plenty of positive feedback from others.
One fan, Ella, commented: “Awesome.”
Another viewer, who admitted to not even owning a car, said: “I don’t have a car, but this is so satisfying that I followed.”
Others found her advice helpful, with Reza adding: “Thanks, May, it was useful,” and another viewer humorously noting, “So toothpaste can clean car scratches but not my teeth.”
