Hordes of holidaymakers sprinted for poolside sunbeds at a £336-a-night luxury resort.

One guest joked the dash was like a scene out of The Hunger Games at the five-star hotel.

Sue Herrijgers, 17, and her older brother Matt, 25, thought they were in for a chilled summer break when they jetted off for their annual trip abroad.

But instead of peace and pampering, the pair were left stunned as fellow guests staged a daily 9am dash to bag the best loungers.

They were staying at the Akasha Beach Hotel and Spa in Crete, Greece.

Sue even filmed the chaos from her balcony, showing holidaymakers sprinting like athletes the moment the pool opened.

The mass of guests swooped around the pool and bagged the luxurious beds with some overhanging the water.

They dumped their towels on them to bag them for the day.

“It’s like watching The Hunger Games with a bed as a trophy,” Sue, from the Netherlands, quipped to What’s The Jam.

Sue and Matt often head away together with their mum Judith, who uses a wheelchair, and say they were left dismayed to see their favourite hotel overrun by ruthless sunbed hunters.

Judith said: “As you can see, it was a real struggle to get a sunbed.

“A few years ago, when Sue and her brother were also staying there and guests weren’t leaving towels or other items.

“There were always beds available, even though the hotel was fully booked.

She claimed: “The bad behaviour of other hotel guests with the sunbeds can really have a negative impact on others’ holidays.”

“It’s a five star hotel, so what they booked was a luxurious and quite expensive stay.”

The Akasha Beach Hotel and Spa has been approached for comment.
