A GP has gone viral on TikTok after lifting the lid on how often some of us should be passing wind – and why some of us are gassier than others.

Known online as Doctor Sooj, the NHS medical professional prompted viewers with the question: “Do you fart too much?”

The 32-year-old’s video has now racked up over 375,000 views, and left viewers stunned by the amount we all should be passing gas.

Doctor Sooj, who is based in Hertfordshire, says: “The NHS says that the average person farts between five and 15 times a day.

“More than that can be normal for some people, however it can also be an indicator of certain conditions.

“So people who have lactose intolerance or coeliac disease tend to be more flatulent than others.”

Those who suffer with lactose intolerance may find that their tummies are particularly sensitive to dairy products.

People with coeliac disease must avoid anything with gluten, such as bread and pasta, and opt for gluten-free options instead to remain as comfortable as possible.

Farting more often could be caused by other issues however.

Doctor Sooj continued: “It can also be a sign of things like constipation, eating things that are difficult to digest, and irritable bowel syndrome.”

Whilst none of the reasons for excessive wind are particularly life threatening, they may leave a person experiencing extreme discomfort.

All of the causes mentioned by the GP can all be easily managed, and may require some modifications to your everyday diet.

Viewers took to the comments section on Doctor Sooj’s video, and had some cracking responses.

Some hilariously outed themselves, and even their partners, as reported by What’s The Jam.

One person joked: “Never felt so targeted in my life.”

Saz wrote: “My hubby says he wished he had a pound for every time I farted.”

Wilma said: “I can’t cough or bend without letting rip.”

“I’m shocked at that statistic. Mine is an hourly rate,” added Martin.

Tracey joked: “I have three of those conditions. I can keep a bouncy castle running for three weeks when I start.”

Ian confessed: “I nearly got the sack at work for farting.”

“15 times a day, amateurs! I have dropped that many before getting up,” quipped someone else.

Mickey added: “I’ve literally just done two watching this video!”
