Curt Smith stunned a Tears for Fears tribute act when he turned up to a gig and watched them perform his songs.

Close to Tears were on stage when they saw the legendary performer in the crowd.

And he even praised their performance at the end of the show.

The tribute band has been performing for around a decade.

But it’s the first time one of their idols has seen them perform.

The exciting meeting happened at The Fleece in Bristol.

Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal founded Tears for Fears in Bath, Somerset, in the early 1980s.

They went on to have huge hits like Mad World, Shout, Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Sowing the Seeds of Love.

“He was truly lovely,” Close to Tears lead singer, Andrew Bevington, told What’s The Jam.

“And believe it or not, he actually paid £17 to get in.

“We were performing his songs and he paid to watch us do it – incredible.

“He came to speak afterwards, and he’s such a nice guy – just amazing.

“I asked what he thought of us, and he said we performed well.

“Tears for Fears has been such a big thing for me since the 1980s.

“The music helped me through life.”

Andrew admitted that playing had been nerve-wracking in Curt’s presence on 8 August.

He added: “We didn’t announce he was there, we didn’t know he would come.

“He’s a very private man and an ordinary guy.

“It didn’t feel right to ask him on stage.

“He was over for a birthday party, and for him to come along, it was just amazing.

“I’ve seen him a number of times but had never met him.

“They say ‘never meet your idols,’ but they are wrong in this case.

“Curt was everything you could hope for – patient, kind, friendly and engaging.

“He was just having a pint with his family and yet wrapped his arms around all who met him.”

Tears for Fears is still making and performing music.

The band’s latest studio album, Tipping Point, was released in 2022, and performances are expected in Las Vegas in the autumn.
