A sample of a rare radioactive stone has hit the auction market.
Cuprosklodowskite, found in the democratic republic of the Congo, is a rare and radioactive mineral that typically sports striking green needle-like crystals inside.
A sample of the mineral has surfaced and hit the auction market with Heritage Auctions, being part of their ‘Fine minerals showcase auction’.

In a statement shared with Whats The Jam,, a spokesperson for Heritage Auctions said: “Most of the crystals have a silky lustre that flashes nicely to give a subtle shimmering effect to the compact group of Cuprosklodowskite.”
The sample is currently sitting at a bid of $500 (£378.08), with the auction set to close on Saturday (29 November).
But potential buyers, be warned: “Please note, this is a uranium-bearing mineral that exhibits low to moderate natural radioactivity.
“It should be handled with care.
“Avoid ingestion and wash hands after handling.”

The owners recommend storing it in a sealed container to minimise the spread of particulate material and only open it within a well-ventilated area.
Cuprosklodowskite is a secondary mineral that forms under unique conditions, specifically the oxidation zone of uranium deposits from the alteration of earlier uranium minerals like pitchblende or uraninite, making it rare and sought after.
The specific sample of Cuprosklodowskite measures in at 11.2 x 7.9 x 6.6 cm (4.4 x 3.1 x 2.6 in).
