A 40-year-old car driven by motorbike world champion Barry Sheene has gone on sale for £80,000.

The Toyota Supra was raced by the iconic British star and still carries his lucky number 7.

It features a 2,759cc, straight-six, Toyota engine and was driven by Sheene in the 1985 British Saloon Car Championship.

He had just retired from Grand Prix motorbike racing, where he won consecutive World Championships in 1976 and 1977.

He still remains the last British competitor to win the premier class of FIM road racing competitions.

He was an accomplished car racer, too, as reported by Whats The Jam.

In the Supra, he placed fifth at the opening Silverstone round, then a DNF at Oulton was followed by a third place at Thruxton.

Sheene achieved top-six finishes in the Supra for the remainder of the season.

The Supra’s listing states: “Vehicle registration records show chassis number #00056255 was sold in February 1987 by Toyota GB Ltd to Diamond Motorsport, and it still carries a current SORN V5.

“The car was validated by Gordon Mayers, who was Team Manager during that period.

“In 2016, the car was invited to the Goodwood Festival of Speed as part of the Barry Sheene Tribute.

“The gearbox is a rare W50 unit with Quaife close-cut gears.

“This is an important race car, once pedalled with alacrity by the much missed Barry Sheene and still finished in the correct Hughes of Beaconsfield livery with Barry’s lucky number 7.

“We can’t help but feel that it’s about time that it was seen out and about again.”

It is being auctioned by Iconic Auctioneers at Silverstone, Northants, on 22 August.

Barry Sheene died of cancer in Queensland, Australia, in 2003, aged 52.
