A shocked man found a raccoon in his shoe drawer after it snuck into his home.

He was getting ready to leave the house when he discovered the bushy-tailed beast.

The man – named only as Mr Zeng – opened up his shoe cabinet to grab some footwear and spotted the raccoon, which was peering back at him.

In shock, he immediately called the animal protection office.

Officers were able to rescue the raccoon and found it was microchipped and being kept as a pet.

It turned out that its owner Mr Xu, lives next door to Mr Zeng.

He said the pet had taken advantage of everyone in the house being asleep, as reported by What’s The Jam.

The raccoon managed to unbolt the door of its cage, and was likely on the lookout for something to eat, Mr Xu said.

During its cheeky adventure, the raccoon pushed open a floor-to-ceiling window and climbed out.

It made its way across an iron fence and climbed the wall of Mr Zeng’s home before crawling into the shoe cabinet by the front door.

And that’s where it stayed for the night, before it was found the next morning.

According to Mr Xu, his pet can be “amazingly destructive”, but fortunately, it did not bite Mr Zeng.

Since the escape in New Taipei City, Taiwan, the raccoon’s owner is taking extra precautions.

He has strengthened the lock on the cage and has said he will ensure doors and windows are kept closed at times when the animal is not supervised.

It is not illegal to raise raccoons as pets in Taiwan, but it is illegal to import them into the country.
