A library has revealed its funny rule which lets people off the hook if their pets have damaged their book.

Middleton Public Library, in Wisconsin, US, often receives loaned books which have been damaged by playful family pups.

The institution used to charge a fee for damaged goods, or report it as lost if the pet had gone too far.

But now, they have made a new rule, where you and your dog can be let off the hook if you provide the library with an image of the culprit, as reported by What’s The Jam.

They then usually share it to their social media in a way to honour the book gobblers.

And this way, you don’t get charged for your pets mistake.

Rebecca Light, support services librarian at the Middleton Public Library, told The Dodo: “We were heavily inspired by the Worcester, MA, Public Library, who recently offered the opportunity to waive fines by showing staff a picture of a cat.

“While the Middleton Public Library no longer has late fees for overdue materials, we do charge for lost or damaged materials.

“Quickly the conversation turned to the frequency of materials actually damaged by our furry friends, and we thought it would be fun to adapt this fine forgiveness program to showcase these ‘offenders.’”

And each time, the library posts an image of the offender and its book to their Facebook page.

And almost immediately, the new rule was a huge success.

While the program was designed with dogs in mind, the library is open to accepting photos from all kinds of furry offenders.

Rebecca Light said: “So far we’ve featured four dog chompers, but I look forward to the diversity of animals we may see.

“Sky, Ward, Quik and Daisy weren’t looking for fame when they decided to chow down on their parents’ library books.

“They were just looking to enjoy a nice snack – and thanks to this new program, everyone gets to share in their joy.”

In one post, the library attached a picture of Sky, a one year-old Australian Labradoodle, and his dinner… the book ‘Iron Flame,’ by Rebecca Yarros.

The post reads: “We understand that library materials can look delicious to pets and young children, so the Middleton Public Library has unveiled a new policy for fatally chomped materials.

“In lieu of payment for the item, we would like to offer you the option of submitting a photo of the beloved culprit.

“Today’s chomper is Sky, who lives with Stephanie.

“Sky had been enjoying the popular Empyrean fantasy novel series until he got to book two, Iron Flame.

“After letting all 623 pages know his true feelings, Sky returned to his other favourite pastime according to Stephanie: chasing squirrels.”
