A Japanese supermarket has launched a new product proving divisive online – “drinkable” mayonnaise.
The chain, Lawson, released the Nomu mayo cup drink, with a picture of a mayonnaise bottle and squirts of the condiment decorating the front.
For sale at ¥198 (£1.04) for 200ml, the convenience store described it as “the chilled drink mayo fanatics have long been waiting for”, according to local news.

The sauce is popular across Japan, but the label states with is a “mayonnaise-style drink” – not strictly the sauce in its usual form – and it is currently in a “test sale period” to see if it is popular enough to become a permanent fixture.
The product has been described as “diabolical” online, where pictures of the drink went viral garnering 36,000 likes, as reported by What’s The Jam.
One person commented: “If you drinking that you diabolical.”
“Ewwwww that’s horrible,” another person agreed.
Someone else joked: “I’m more shocked America didn’t come up with the idea first.”
“My cholesterol went up reading that,” another user quipped.
Others likened it to “sperm” and said it was “cursed”.
Someone else commented: “I like mayo but even i would gag!! Maybe mayo is different in Japan.”
But others were more open to the unique beverage.
One said: “I would try it.”
“I SAID I NEED IT,” said another fan.
Someone else added: “In their defense, Japanese mayo is waaaay better than American mayo.”
