An early riser was spotted reserving a prime spot on a beach before the sun had even come up.

A camera used by a local weather monitoring team captured the early bird arriving at 5:36 a.m.

By 5:41 am, he had placed down two sunbeds and opened a parasol between them.

Meanwhile, night owls could be seen walking home along the beachfront promenade in the early hours of 20 July.

The bizarre scenes unfolded on El Cura Beach in Spain’s Torrevieja, a resort popular with British holidaymakers and expats.

Proyecto Mastral, which shared the clip, wrote: “At 5:36 a.m., he arrives at the beach.

“It’s still pitch black, and some people seem to be on their way home.

“There’s a bit of surf, but it’s clear where the front row of the beach is this Saturday.

“At 5:41 a.m., the moment arrives: the first parasol of the day goes up on Playa del Cura.”

A similar scene was captured on camera at the same beach in July last year – also at 5:36 a.m.

However, it’s unclear whether this year’s early bird is the same person, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Verónica commented: “I hope he put a GPS tracker on it for when he comes back five hours later.”

Another person added: “These people need a psychological evaluation.”

Some towns in Spain’s Valencian Community have introduced fines of up to €3,000 (£2,569) for racing to claim the best spots on hotel beaches and by hotel pools.

The authorities in Calpe, for example, brought in a ban last year on setting up chairs, sunbeds, or parasols on beaches before 9:30 a.m.
