Wild boars allegedly illegally released have attacked a second person as safety fears grow.

Rewilders are thought to be behind the freeing of the animals.

Two weeks ago a dog walker had a close encounter with one of them, which frightened his pooch.

Now horse rider Dee Wilkinson has revealed a friend was thrown from her horse after a sudden run-in with a boar.

Wild boars allegedly released on Dartmoor have attacked a second person, sparking safety fears. Experts suspect illegal rewilding as riders and dog walkers worry.

Dee, who lives near the village of Princetown, in Dartmoor National Park, Devon, has even filmed the wild animals in her garden.

She has lived on Dartmoor all her life and has never seen boar there until now.

“A lot of horse riders are being put off riding out now,” she told What’s The Jam.

“A friend of mine actually came off her horse as he was frightened by the boar and reacted badly.

“My horse Larry definitely does not like them.

“Horses are known for not liking pigs of any kind.

“It is a big concern for horse riders as horses are likely to bolt at the sight of wild boar.

“I’m not frightened of them as they don’t appear aggressive towards people.

“But if you have a dog, they will naturally chase them off.

“I think it’s a sad case if someone has tried to rewild the boar.

“But it’s not fitting with the circumstances or environment.

“It’s sad for the pigs as the territory just isn’t available and they damage the good ground which livestock on Dartmoor need and also break into farmers’ fields and wreck the ground.

“They are hungry and don’t have enough ground for food for themselves

“They are foraging around lost and hungry.

“They don’t like dogs and there’s so much mismanagement of Dartmoor with gorse getting out of control that poor walkers, horse riders and dog owners are now forced onto very small, contained paths.

“This makes it impossible to get away if you come face to face with a boar.”

Experts suspect the boars could have been illegally reintroduced, possibly by people who want to repopulate the moors with the once indigenous species.

Boar used to roam Dartmoor but were later hunted to extinction in Britain by the 17th century.

Dog walker Richard Blight said last month: “I dread to think what would happen if a child were to come face to face with a boar on a path.

“Before this happened I would have said properly managed boar wouldn’t be a problem on Dartmoor. But not now.

“This is a national park and it can get very busy, especially in summer.”

Retired gas engineer Richard, 62, said the tusked boar was well over twice the height and width of his dog.

He estimated it weighed around 180Ib (12 stone).

The attack happened near Poundsgate in Dartmoor National Park, Devon.

Richard, of nearby Ashburton, who has been walking daily on Dartmoor all his life, fears the wild boar could wreak havoc.

A Dartmoor National Park Authority spokesperson said: “We’ve received reports of wild boar sightings on Dartmoor.

“We’re working closely with landowners and other agencies to obtain further information and guidance.”

Devon Wildlife Trust added: “We are aware of reports of boar on Dartmoor National Park and will be working with the Dartmoor National Park Authority and others over the coming weeks to understand more about their presence.”
