A WW2 hero has finally received his long-overdue service medal – on his 99th birthday.
Veteran, Harry Filby, who served as an RAF radio operator, was eligible for the War Medal 1939-45 but had never applied for it.
So, staff at Elgar Care, who support Mr Filby in his home in Hereford, decided to put in a request for the honour as a surprise birthday present for him.

The War Medal 1939-45 was created for everyone who served full-time in the armed forces and the Merchant Navy for at least 28 days during WW2.
But Mr Filby had declined to apply himself feeling he had just been doing his duty, reports What’s The Jam.
A spokesperson for Elgar Care said: “We have had the absolute honour and privilege to be able to arrange for one of our clients, Harry, to be awarded his war medal on his 99th birthday.
“Harry was in communications in World War II.
“He never applied for his medal, as he felt he was just doing what he had to do.

“His family wanted him to have it as they know what an amazing man he really is and wanted him to be honoured.
“This humble man really deserves it.
“Once we found out about this from his carer Karl, we couldn’t wait to jump on the case to apply for it for him.

“Karl managed to find all the information we needed through their chats.
“Kate from Armed Forces Covenant Herefordshire and Karen from the Veterans Welfare Service helped out when we contacted them.
“Our registered manager, Tracey Waters and Karl, were both there with lots of other family members when Colonel Andy Taylor OBE DL went to present it to him.
“A few tears all around and an emotional time to thank this perfect gentleman for his service.
“Thank you, Harry, for your service, we really do appreciate you.”
The gesture was appreciated by Hereford residents, too.
Deanne Dolloway said: “How lovely and well deserved.
“Happy birthday Harry, such a truly lovely gentleman.
“Well done to all involved.
“I’m sure he will always remember this special birthday.”
Susan Roden added: “A huge happy birthday to the kindest, funniest gentleman who has the biggest heart.
“What an amazing way to celebrate.”
