Nichola Jarvis, a mother of five, experienced a shocking incident when she discovered live bugs in her Sainsbury’s rice, likening the ordeal to a Bushtucker Trial on I’m A Celeb.
While preparing a bacon and pea risotto, she was horrified to find at least seven crawling insects in her half-cooked dish.
Despite the rice being well within the expiration date of 26 July next year, Nichola discarded the entire meal, opting for a kebab instead.

Dissatisfied with Sainsbury’s response, she received only a £5 voucher as an apology.
Expressing her disgust, Nichola remarked, “It just reminded me of a Bushtucker Trial on I’m A Celebrity, and I started to gag. I had to throw everything in the bin.”
Nichola, a former childminder from Margate, Kent, purchased the £2.40 Arborio Risotto Rice from Sainsbury’s in Ramsgate.
Dissatisfied with the supermarket’s response, she emphasized her desire for an explanation rather than a £5 voucher as compensation. Nichola reported the incident to Thanet District Council Environmental Health, prompting an investigation.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson expressed regret and assured ongoing communication with Nichola, emphasizing the rarity of such an experience.

The spokesperson added, “We have processes in place to prevent this from happening and are investigating this case with our supplier.” The council assured that the complaint would be thoroughly investigated, considering criteria such as public health risk and potential affected individuals.
