A rare sports car based on legendary engineer Bruce McLaren’s own motor has gone on sale for £50,000.

The red 1998 UVA McLaren MR6 GTR is modelled on the McLaren M6A prototype race car.

Three of them were developed into road-legal coupés – one of which became McLaren’s personal car.

The motor spawned the tribute that is now on sale to the public, as reported by Whats The Jam.

It took 10 years to research and build the car, and “the result is clearly outstanding, finished to aircraft quality with attention to detail that is rarely achieved”, according to its listing.

It is powered by a fully rebuilt and enhanced 4-litre Rover V8 mated to an adapted 5-speed Porsche 911 gearbox, all beautifully detailed with the underside of the vehicle having the same exceptional finish as the top.

Its listing reads: “Now correctly UK-registered as H6GTR and accompanied by a comprehensive history file including many hand-written notes and a photographic record of the build, the UVA now awaits its next custodian who will benefit from this fastidious build, ensuring that heads will be turned on every journey, certainly not for the shy and retiring.”

With very little use since completion, it is suggested that a period of running-in and acclimatisation will be required to get the very best from the car.

It is going on sale with Iconic Auctioneers in Silverstone, Northants, in August.
