Nigel Mansell recently auctioned off a significant portion of his Formula 1 memorabilia, fetching £55,000, which was notably less than half of the estimated £117,000.

The former racing star put 55 items up for auction simultaneously, but the final total came to just £54,764.

The most valuable piece in the collection was a framed photograph titled “Four World Champions on a Wall,” featuring Mansell alongside fellow F1 legends Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and Nelson Piquet. This signed photo sold for £5,040.

Another notable item, a signed 1993 Arai helmet worn by Mansell at Donington Park in October 1993, was purchased for £3,600.

Mansell’s first-place plate from the 1987 San Marino Grand Prix fetched £2,700, while a framed McLaren race suit from 1995 went for £1,680.

Among the more unique items, a signed bottle of Moët & Chandon champagne sold for £240, despite being open and empty.

In an unusual turn, even Mansell’s old race undergarments were auctioned. The collection of unused long johns, socks, vests, and balaclavas was expected to sell for £500 but was bought for £240.

The auction, held by RM Sotheby’s at Cliveden House in Taplow, near Maidenhead, Berkshire, took place on June 12.

A spokesperson for the auctioneers highlighted the diversity of the 55 lots, which included helmets, winner’s trophies, jackets, and race suits.

This event followed a highly successful 2023 auction where over 300 items from Mansell’s collection were sold, doubling the pre-sale estimates.

Nigel Mansell, who secured 31 wins and 59 podium finishes throughout his Formula 1 career, was crowned world champion in 1992.
