Iconic Wicked Witch of the West hat from The Wizard of Oz expected to fetch $3M at auction

The iconic hat worn by the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz is expected to fetch $3M at auction.

And it’s not the only piece of historic memorabilia on offer.

The auction, which will take place on the 9 and 10 December, is set to feature a copy of the 1903 printing of The Wizard of Oz, reports What’s The Jam.

It was previously a gift for Judy Garland’s tutor’s daughter and comes complete with signatures from the entire cast, as well as a message from Garland about her time on the set, with a starting bid of $250,000 (£190,000).

Other items include the original key half-poster for the first Star Wars movie, painted by Tom Jung, which already has a starting bid of $1m (£760,000).

And the costume worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger during the climactic sequence of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, with has a starting bid of $100,000 (£76,038).

But the pièce de résistance is the Wicked Witch of the West’s hat from the 1939 cinema classic.

Last year, another witch’s hat used in the flying scenes of the movie went on sale and sold for $2.93m (£2.2m).

It’s believed this one in particular, worn by Margaret Hamilton, will fetch in excess of $3m (£2.28m).

The items will be sold off by Heritage Auctions at their Hollywood Auction event, taking place at their headquarters in Dallas, Texas.

A spokesperson for Heritage Auctions said: “The hat, much like Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers, stands as a symbol of transformation and power.

“Today, that hat remains a touchstone of Hollywood’s Golden Age, representing both a feat of design and a monument to storytelling that continues to resonate through generations – and through the Wicked films’ modern reinterpretations of Elphaba’s misunderstood magic.”
