A huge, 30ft tall tropical plant is growing on a suburban roundabout over 5,000 miles from where they normally grow.

The Agave Americana – dubbed the century plant as it only flowers once in a hundred years – is in full bloom.

It is on the road junction in Ramsgate, Kent.

The unusual plants are native to Mexico.

That is 5,225 miles away from the town.

One local told What’s The Jam: “It’s now about 30ft plus tall.

“It is in full bloom so sadly it will not be long until it dies off or collapses.

It was spotted in its full glory yesterday (26 Aug).

The mild spring and early summer heatwave is thought to have triggered it.

Agaves can grow to over 40ft, but as soon as they fully flower, they die.

It could pose a headache for the county council’s highways department.

But for now, the monster plant is being monitored as people go to see the rare and exotic bloom.

It is not the first time an Agave Americana has been seen in Ramsgate.

In 2015, one bloomed at a house in the town owned by Phil and Janice Dabbs.

Over 10,000 people went to visit it.

As well as Mexico, Agave Americanas also grow in parts of the US, Chile and the Caribbean.

On Monday (25 Aug) one was also seen in the village of Hartford, near Huntington, Cambs.

Keen gardener Tony Kennington and his wife Padrica were given it 25 years ago.

When they got it it was just 18 inches tall and it is now 20 feet tall.
