A guilt-ridden pensioner has finally confessed to committing a late night theft – after nearly 60 years.

RNLI crew members were stunned when a mysterious box landed on the station’s doorstep.

It contained an old flag, a confession letter and a £20 donation.

The note revealed the flag had been taken from Trearddur Bay station in Anglesey, Wales, by a group of mischievous teenagers 56 years ago.

The note said: “In 1969 me and two friends were camping up the road from you.

“One night on the way back to the tent we passed your station and flag pole, one of us climbed up the pole and took the flag.

“Wrong of us.

“We were only 17 at the time, but that’s no excuse!

“Just found the flag again, forgot all about it.

“I was having a sort out and there it was.

“After all these years, I hope it gets back to you.

“Very sorry.”

The donation was welcomed by the crew, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Lifeboat Operations Manager Paul Moffett said: “To the culprits if you see this – all is forgiven and we won’t name names.

“Thank you for your kind donation and for making us smile.

“It is great to have a piece of station history returned after so many years.

“All is forgiven.”

Volunteers have now put the flag back in its rightful place during a sunny morning training day.

The confession made locals laugh.

Gilly Prior said: “That’s the most British thing I’ve seen in ages; love that”.

Nick Bounds added: “Teenagers will be naughty teenagers.

“Love this.”
