The first-ever Tank Girl comic strip is heading under the hammer and could smash £30,000.

The hugely popular character has been a cult favourite for nearly 40 years, and now the original page three artwork from her 1988 debut is up for grabs.

Artist Jamie Hewlett – who later co-created Gorillaz with Damon Albarn – teamed up with writer Alan Martin to bring the post-apocalyptic punk heroine to life.

Tank Girl first burst onto the scene in the debut issue of Deadline magazine, with her wild adventures running until the mag closed in 1995.

Her anarchic appeal spread worldwide, spawning the hit graphic novel Tank Girl: The Odyssey and a feature film in 1995.

The rare strip goes to auction on 18 December and will be sold by Ewbank’s in Woking, Surrey, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Tom Francis-Duma, the auction house’s comics specialist, said: “Jamie Hewlett is renowned for his bold, kinetic, punk-influenced visual style that blends comics, music, and animation into a unique pop-culture aesthetic.

“Tank Girl was at the forefront of the counterculture movement in the 1990s and remains one of the strongest characters ever set down in the world of graphic art.

“This artwork comes from her first appearance and showcases her iconic Tank, as she charges off a cliff towards the peril of Rocky Deadhead and his gang of renegade kangaroos.

“This has to rank among the most desirable pieces of artwork from any comic strip ever created.”
