A “mind-bending” optical illusion has left TikTok users scratching their heads at what has been dubbed the new version of the infamous viral dress.

While enjoying a beach day with his niece, Josh Ferrier snapped a picture of an imprint of feet in the sand – but it turned out to be a divisive image.

After sharing it with pal Alice James, the duo realized the picture can either be viewed as imprinted feet, or in ‘3D’ with the footprints coming towards the camera.

Alice shared it on TikTok, where the post has been viewed 3.2 million times, and was compared to the 2015 viral image of a dress – which some people saw as white and gold in colour, and others saw as blue and black.

“I see both images when I look at the photo,” Josh, 30, a radio executive producer from Sydney, Australia, told What’s The Jam.

“Sometimes I see the feet coming out of the ground and other I see it indented.

“It constantly changes.”

He took the snap last month at Brighton Beach in South Australia while playing with his niece Rose.

He then shared it with Alice, 32, who said: “When he first sent it to me I thought he was losing it just for sending me a photo of footprints.

“Then I blinked and they went 3D.

“My mind was blown!”

She shared a video of herself reacting to the image online, where the post garnered more than 250,000 likes and left viewers divided in the comment section.

One person said: “No because at first it was an imprint and now I can’t unsee it coming out of the sand.”

“I can see both too,” another user agreed.

Someone else insisted: “IT JUST SWITCHED ON ME.”

“Ok initially I only saw indents in the sand but now I can only see them coming out,” another person added.

One viewer commented: “I feel like the comments are gaslighting me.”

Someone else pointed out: “They’re obviously indents though bc the alternative is not how foot prints work.”

“I don’t get how people are seeing them coming out the sand when the dent in the heel is so deep,” another baffled user wrote.

One person insisted: “I only see footprints in the sand. Footprints don’t come out of the Sand. That’s some kind of hallucination.”

“I was like how can you see it coming out and then suddenly it switched to 3D and now I can’t unsee it,” said someone else.

Another viewer added: “WHAT! I always saw the white and gold dress as white and gold but this was mind-bending.”

“Sorry, I see inside only, because my head tells me you step footprints INTO sand…” said another user.

Alice said the reaction: “Most people see both versions of the foot.

“The funniest comment was from someone who thought I edited the image and video halfway through.”
