Luke Cooper, a seemingly ordinary 31-year-old music tutor from Barnsley, has an unusual hobby that sets him apart: testing hand dryers in public restrooms.

Luke’s passion extends to supermarkets, restaurants, motorway service stations, bowling alleys, cinemas, theatres, and airports.

Even on holidays, he can’t resist the allure of evaluating hand dryers, as evidenced by his testing spree in New York, USA.

Since October of last year, Luke has been meticulously documenting his hand dryer encounters, aiming to inform the public about their performance.

His reviews are comprehensive, considering factors like temperature, air pressure, surface area coverage, drying time, and wall height. Bonus points are awarded for aesthetic features such as LED lights.

Luke’s favorite dryer is the Dyson Airblade dB. He shared with What’s The Jam, “It’s not my job. A ‘passion’ would be a better word I would say, but it’s a service I like to provide to the public.”

He humorously added, “Not your traditional ‘key worker’, but it’s important work. Name a better feeling than drying your hands in a warm cocoon of circulating air.”

Luke elaborated on his criteria: “The temperature should be a perfect balance of warm circulation that cushions your hands in a soft blanket of dryness. The air pressure needs to be powerful, enough to ripple the skin. The surface area needs to be wide enough to dry both hands simultaneously.

If it has any flashing lights on it then I’m usually sold immediately, this is a big selling point.”

Luke’s testing ventures have taken him to varied locations, from the Bridlington Spa Theatre to Heathrow Airport, and even to his hotel in New York and the Empire State Building.

He enjoys a diverse range of testing environments, from a humble McDonald’s to the iconic Empire State Building. “No stone gets left unturned,”

Luke remarked. “Many of my life decisions come down to testing hand dryers. Need a few bits from the shop? Let’s go to the big Asda and see what hand dryers they have to offer.

Can’t be bothered to cook? Let’s check out Five Guys and see if they can blow us away. It’s a mindset.”

Luke shares his findings on his TikTok page, Dried & Tested, where he ranks his top five hand dryers:

1. Cineworld – Sheffield: Dyson Airblade dB
– Dubbed the “GOAT of hand dryers,” it scores a perfect 10/10 for its unbeatable performance.

2. Leicester Forest Services – M1 motorway: Dyson Airblade 9KJ
– Praised for its fantastic performance and futuristic design, it earns a strong 9/10.

3. Cineworld – White Rose shopping centre – Leeds: Mitsubishi Jet Towel
– Described as the less talented cousin of the Dyson Airblade dB, it still receives a solid 9/10.

4. Hollywood Bowl – Sheffield: ATC
– Noted for its decent performance in a whimsically decorated restroom, it garners an 8/10.

5. Empire State Building – New York: Dyson Airblade V– Although its condition and placement let it down slightly, it still secures an honorable mention with a 7/10 for its quality.

Luke’s unique hobby may seem dull to some, but his dedication and detailed reviews have turned him into an unlikely connoisseur of public restroom hand dryers.
